Cylinder formula
Cylinder features:
- Two parallel, congruent circular bases
- Curved side connecting the two bases
- Axis perpendicular to the bases
- Side surface unfolds into a rectangle
- Hollow cylinder volume can be found from the difference between outer and inner radii
- Horizontal tank liquid volume can be found from the circular segment area

Unit Conversion Reference
| Unit | Length Conversion | Volume Conversion |
|---|---|---|
| Millimeter (mm) | 1 mm = 0.1 cm | 1 mm³ = 0.001 cm³ |
| Centimeter (cm) | 1 cm = 10 mm | 1 cm³ = 1 mL |
| Meter (m) | 1 m = 100 cm | 1 m³ = 1000 L |
| Inch (in) | 1 in = 2.54 cm | 1 in³ ≈ 16.39 cm³ |
| Foot (ft) | 1 ft = 30.48 cm | 1 ft³ ≈ 28.32 L |
Instructions
Software Usage Instructions
- Select calculation type: Choose solid right circular cylinder, hollow cylinder/pipe, semicylinder, liquid volume in a horizontal cylindrical tank, or oblique cylinder volume as needed.
- Set units: Select the input length unit, such as mm, cm, m, in, or ft; you can also separately select the volume result unit, such as cm³, mL, L, m³, in³, ft³, or US gallons.
- Select input method: Radius input is used by default. If the diameter is known, enable “Use diameter input,” and the system will automatically convert it to the radius.
- Enter dimension parameters:
- Outer radius/outer diameter: Enter the cylinder base dimension.
- Height/length: Enter the height for a standard cylinder; enter the container length in horizontal cylindrical tank mode.
- Inner radius: Required in hollow cylinder/pipe mode, and must be smaller than the outer radius.
- Liquid height: Required in horizontal cylindrical tank mode, with a range from 0 to the outer diameter.
- Set density and precision: You can select material densities such as water, steel, aluminum, concrete, wood, and plastic, or enter a custom density; calculation precision supports integers up to 6 decimal places.
- Start calculation: When automatic calculation is enabled, changes to parameters update the results simultaneously; when disabled, click the “Calculate Cylinder” button to calculate manually.
- View results: The results page displays volume, common unit conversions, weight estimate, base area, lateral area, surface area, circumference, as well as full capacity and fill percentage for horizontal tanks.
- View diagram and steps: The diagram changes with the parameters; you can drag to rotate and use the mouse wheel to zoom. Enable “Show calculation steps” to view formulas, substituted values, and the conversion process.
- Save and export: You can save the current settings, copy the main result or full results, export a CSV file, or copy a share link with parameters.
